Stage Performances
Stage performances of works (i.e. with acting and dancing) are covered under German laws for theatrical performances.
GEMA (Gesellschaft für musikalische Aufführungs- und mechanische Vervielfältigungsrechte), the German organization responsible for rights to music or the respective collecting rights society of your country, does not handle the rights for these stage performances. This means that stage performances need not be registered with GEMA and are not covered by flat-rate contracts (churches/schools) with GEMA.
Staged performances of children‘s musicals or operas must be registered in advance and licensed by the publisher as copyright holder.
Our Performance Portal allows you to calculate such costs for many musical performances yourself, and at the same time you can provide us with all the necessary data to enable us to put together our proposed agreement for you. To reach the portal go to the detailed information page for the relevant piece of music, click on Proceed to purchase and then on More information. In the portal simply fill in the details about the performance and the scores you require. You’ll then receive a tailor-made offer from us to assist you in calculating your budget. If you have any questions at all, we’re here to help. Just email us at performance@carus-verlag.com.
Concert Performances
Concert performances have to be registered with GEMA (Germany) or the respective collecting rights society of your country. More information, forms, etc. are available at GEMA's website at www.gema.de.
Modifying works
Any change made to a copyright work, whether to the text, the music or the title, requires the approval of the copyright holder. This approval must be requested in writing from Carus-Verlag.
Open sheet music files
We offer open MusicXML files for a number of children's musicals. You can use these files to transpose parts into a different key or to distribute them among different instruments, for example. The files contain the sheet music of the score, with each part of the work stored in a separate file.
MusicXML is a transport format that was created directly from our sheet music files (usually Sibelius). To edit the file, you need a music notation program that can import MusicXML files, as well as expertise in using that program. It is possible that the result of any conversion might contain inaccuracies, and that the layout might not correspond to the expected standards of sheet music graphics.
Please note: You may only purchase open sheet music files after entering into a performance contract. To do so, please use our performance portal. After you have placed an order and made payment, the file you have ordered will be made available to you via a link in an e-mail.
It is not possible to order a MusicXML file without a performance contract.
MusicXML files may only be used for arranging instrumental parts for your own performance. The production of choral parts for your performance is not allowed. Vocal scores and/or choral scores are available separately from Carus or from music retailers. Furthermore you are not permitted to transfer any MusicXML file to a third party.
Please also refer to our general terms and conditions.
Recordings for Documentation Purposes
Documentation recordings of performances require permission. Upon request, Carus-Verlag will give such permission.
Mention in Advertising/Public Relations
For each advertisement and program for the performance, the following information is required:
- Full title of the piece
- Name of the author(s)
- Publisher name (Carus-Verlag)
This also applies to posters and online announcements. Mentioning the publisher name is voluntary.
Use of Images for your Advertising
Cover photos of sheet music or images from the Carus-Verlag website may be used to advertise your events with no further consent required. We will also be glad to provide you with a graphic suitable for your advertising work either for free or for a small fee. Please contact us! Contact: performance@carus-verlag.com
